| March 2012 Still using Carbonite? Carbonite advertises on The Ed Schultz Radio Show. The following are direct quotes from Schultz: “President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they're talking about, like this right-wing slut, what's her name?, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she's a talk slut.” |
| May 2011 I have changed my preferred backup system to SpiderOak. |
| I will no longer recommend or use Carbonite, their customer service leaves
a lot to be desired (it sucks), and SpiderOak provides more service. Although
it does cost about $30 more a year for 100 Gig, one account can be used
across a number of PCs. I've been using it for over a month now and have no regrets about switching. |

Sunday 3.11.12
Someone wants you to think Adobe Reader has jumped a full version and is ready to release version 12. I got this email today, which should be an obvious red flag since about 80% of my spam comes on weekends, and not many companies work on Sunday. >>Action Required : Upgrade Adobe Acrobat Reader 2012 For Your PC And Mac<< Reader is now at version X, not 10, with no mention of X eye (or 11) in the works. The email link for the download is another red flag. www.2012-adobe-instant-upgrade.com/ The whois record says Regional Network Information Center in Russia owns this site, last time I was in San Jose Adobe had a building there, why move to Russia? While there might not be much difference in the forms of government between Russia and California, it sure it a lot warmer in San Jose. |

Friday 9.2.11
Got some fake email about ACH (automated clearing house) transactions being
suspended or rejected. The sender shows up as nacha.net, similar to the
real operator of the ACH network, nacha.org.The IP address of the sender is registered to groupmelvindesign.com, not NACHA. |

Facebook game plants fake anti virus programA client's brother in law was playing a game on Facebook when a widow popped up telling him he was infected and needed to "click here" to clean his PC. The virus that he enabled by clicking changed a registry entry and prevented any program with an .exe file extension from running. This registry fix from dougknox.com fixed the first problem, the portable version of Malwarebytes cleaned the system but had to be run from a CD, the virus would not run it from the C drive. |

Wednesday 6.15.11
Critical Adobe Acrobat and Flash updates releasedCheck your flash version here - scroll down the page to see the current version for your browser. Use this link to download the latest version, it bypasses the download manager they want you to use, why waste your time downloading a program you don't need? What kind of vulnerabilities are in the download manager? Acrobat can be updated from within the program from the Help menu. If you don't want Adobe's reader try Foxit reader, which recently upgraded to ver 5. Java has upgraded version 6 to update 26. |
